Tokyo through Stephen Wiltshire's lens

We are honoured to commission Stephen Wiltshire, the renowned British artist known for his extraordinary ability to draw intricate cityscapes entirely from memory, to create a new artwork capturing Shibuya, one of Tokyo’s most vibrant districts in the heart of Japan, the country where our story began.

"As an artist, my vision connects me to the world"

Stephen Wiltshire began drawing before he could fully speak, capturing the world with remarkable memory and emotion. Known for recreating entire cityscapes in meticulous detail after just one viewing, his extraordinary talent is powered by vision.

Japan is our origin, our home, and our heart. To have Stephen revisit one of Tokyo's most iconic landmarks, Shibuya Crossing, was deeply meaningful. But what made this collaboration truly special was not just the artwork itself, but the shared values that brought us together.

"I need to see every detail because I draw from memory, and memory begins with clear vision. Now that I am experiencing presbyopia, I rely on lenses that can keep up with me. Thanks to this project, I had the chance to wear Nikon Spectacle Lenses for the first time and it made me realise that not all lenses are equal. With their lenses, I can get the clarity, contrast, and comfort I need so I can keep doing what I love, without compromise"

Vision is more than just sight, it’s how we experience the world, connect with its beauty, and express what moves us.

Stephen’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and precision.

His ability to overcome adversity and channel his gift into breathtaking works of art resonates with us profoundly. At Nikon Lenswear, we’ve spent decades innovating lenses that bring clarity and detail to everyday life. We saw in Stephen a reflection of our own commitment: to help people see the world in its finest detail, and to empower them to live fully through vision they can feel.

When Stephen stood at Shibuya Crossing, he didn’t just observe, he absorbed. A day later, he recreated the entire scene from memory, capturing the energy and the moment from a street-level perspective. In just six hours, he produced a masterpiece that speaks not only to his talent, but to the emotional depth of seeing Tokyo through his eyes.
